Other hurdles in calculation of BSA
If you live in the United States you may have additional hurdles to overcome before calculation of BSA can be achieved. This is because all over the world except in America the basic measure of length and distance are metric and the height is measured in centimeters and weight is measured kilograms. The formulas used to BSA are based on metric system. If you are living in the United States, you may be more likely to know your height in inches and weight in pounds. If this is the case your weight has to be converted from pounds to kilograms and the height is to be converted from inches to centimeters before these can be used in the BSA calculation. You may use a simple calculator to convert height from inches to centimeters and weight from pound to kilograms. This is not difficult and the formula for this conversion is given below.
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
1 pound = 0.454 kilograms
If your height is 70 inches the height in centimeters is 70 x 2.54 = 177.8 centimeters
If your weight is 180 pounds the weight in kilograms is 180 x 0.454 = 81.72 kilograms
Once you have converted your weight and height to the metric system, you are now ready to use the above formula to calculate the BSA. Once you have the value of BSA, now you know how to calculate the total drug dose for you.
